• Awkward Anime Episode 9: Kotonoha no Niwa (Garden of Words) Makoto Shinkai’s desire to show the world of modern Tokyo and how everyone has a story led him to developing the 2013 46 minute long animated feature Garden of Words. This was a unique movie in the sense that, as opposed to his other works, unusual camera angles were used and the story was wrapped up with 14 minutes away from the hour mark. I sat down just 24 hours before typing this review, a hot cup of tea in my hand, my blanket keeping me warm as I hit play, not expecting anything different to that of Shinkai’s other works. “The story of Takao, who wants to know other people” This film was intended to be shown as a unique romance between two similar minds with maturity at the forefront. Director Makato Shinkai has stated numerous times of how he wanted the feature to be promoted and viewed differently to other projects, with the focus on the scenery and the theme of helping being important: “To enjoy like music in their spare time and provide a little bit of relaxation” I may be one of the few, but I never once felt like the two main characters would “fall in love” with one another. Young 15 year old Takao up to the point he confessed to Yukino, I viewed as a talented, driven matured teenager. Proven by his passion in making a career out of shoemaking, the student at the centre of the story I felt was a terrific character to epitomise Shinkai’s views on maturity at a young age.
